There is nothing better than being out on the water with my buddies for the day. Rods, tackle, fish finder, whatever you need on your kayak, the best fishing kayak for you will accomodate what you need.
There are several types of kayaks and canoes, but typically anglers will gravitate towards recreational kayaks. They are popular with novice paddlers, photographers, or fisherman. Most recreational kayaks are 10 or 12 feet long. Specialized angling kayaks take many features of these kayaks and add things like rod holders. They also take some features of touring kayaks, such as rudders, to help keep a straight course (more on the best fishing kayak features below).
I have outlined the basic types below.
Sit on Top Kayaks
Sit on top kayaks are user-friendly, stable and easy to paddle. They are easy to get in and out of and can be used in many types of water including saltwater, rivers, lakes and canals. They have a sealed hull and the paddler sits on top of a molded seat.
These types of kayaks are typically wider, which makes them quite stable (something important for a fisherman to consider), but the wider hull makes them slower than a touring model. When I am headed out on the water, distance is not usually my aim, so the speed is not a factor that I consider in my own personal purchase!
These kayaks give you a wet ride, as there is no spray skirt to keep you dry, and no protection from wind. There are many brands that make a sit-on-top kayak for sale, and they range from basic models that cost a few hundred dollars to deluxe pedal-powered and motorized kayaks that cost a few thousand.
Inflatable Kayaks for Sale
Inflatable kayaks are the perfect choice of kayak for compact storage needs. They can inflate in minutes and are best for those who paddle on mostly calm waters. While I initially thought these would be like a blow-up toy, they can be surprisingly sturdy. While these make a great inexpensive fishing kayak, you do not necessarily want the cheapest ones out there.
Some of the reviews say they are exactly as I had imagined. Like getting on a blow-up boat! But do not totally throw inflatable kayaks for sale off your radar. Sit in Kayaks
Sit inside kayaks share many of the same features of a sit-on-top kayak (SOT kayak). The major difference is the sit-in kayak has an enclosed place to sit. It is known as the cockpit and the area around it is known as the cockpit rim. A lot of sit-in kayaks have a spray skirt that will keep the paddler dry from spray from the paddles or other drips of water.
Because you sit lower, these kayaks will shelter you from the wind and will likely give you a warmer ride. The downside of the sit-in kayak style is if you flip your kayak, it is much tougher to recover as it will be full of water. There are plenty of sit-in kayaks for sale, just like the sit on top models, which gives you plenty of options, if this is your kayak of choice. Living in the cooler Pacific Northwest I gave these a good look, as a warm ride makes for a nicer day in the spring and fall!

The Ocean Kayak Prowler is known as a very stable fishing kayak (but not designed for standing to cast specifically). It has below deck rod storage, a comfort plus eat, 2 rod holders, a rear oversized tank well, and can support 450 lbs. It is a bit on the larger side at 13′ 4″ and weighs 56 lbs.
Why was this my number one?
Well, when I am out on the water alone, this kayak is comfortable to paddle and its size makes it a fast ride to get to my favorite fishing spots. The front click to lock hatch is a good size and I can easily fit everything I need inside. The foot wells are nice, but I will admit that the seat is not the best for an all day paddle. While I am often on calm waters, I know that this yak will cut any waves I come up against, so that peace of mind makes me happy.
This kayak was also a reasonable price point for my budget. It offered exactly what I wanted and came in at a price I liked!

The Sun Dolphin Journey is a lightweight kayak, it weighs just over 40 lbs. It is my top pick for the best fishing kayak under $1000 and under $500. With these light kayaks, its maximum supported weight is 250 lbs. If you are 6” tall I would suggest going with the larger model. The Sun Dolphin Journey has two flush mount and one swivel fishing rod holders. Other features include, a large seat, protective thigh pads and adjustable foot braces, retractable carrying handles, paddle holders storage and shock cord deck rigging.

It is the perfect model for fly fishing and has a slip-resistant deck. With 6 mounts there is plenty of room for your rod holders, GPS, or camera. Huge storage offers room for your day’s catch, your cooler, your tackle box, or battery for a trolling motor. The Old Town Predator MX has side mount paddle storage as well. While other models offer the option of standing and casting, if you plan on doing quite a bit of it, I suggest seriously considering the Old Town Predator MX.
BKC Brooklyn Kayak Company UH-FK184 9’2” Sit on Top Fishing Kayak
This angler kayak for sale from the Brooklyn Kayak Company is shorter than average and weights just 45 lbs. It has a 250 lb capacity and comes with a deluxe seat and a two piece aluminum paddle. This sit on fishing kayak also features 4 flush mount rod holders, two sealed hatches and four carry handles. I like that this model comes with a paddle and a decent seat right off the bat, but it is quite short, so keep that in mind. If you want something short for the back of the truck this kayak could be the perfect recreational kayak.

If you have a lower budget, definitely consider this option or the otherSun Dolphin Kayaks.

A popular option for rivers and lakes, I love how lightweight the Sun Dolphin kayaks are. It weighs 55 lbs and has a 350 lb capacity.
If you do not have a lot to invest into your hobby, do not think that you will be land-locked. There are lots of cheap kayaks for fishing. For the budget-conscious fisherman, there are plenty of cheap kayaks for sale. This is one of my favorites.

The Hobie i9S9 foot inflatable kayak may not be nominated for the ultimate fishing kayak award, but was specifically designed for would-be kayakers who have limited space. It features Hobie’s MirageDrive 180 pedal drive system to keep your hands free to fish. The i9S on-the-water performance rivals that of rigid boats, and has a 325 lb capacity. It comes with a wheeled travel case that makes this kayak fit into 30″x25″x12″ It comes with a four-piece paddle w/ aluminum shaft and hand pump. It for sure has a limited audience due to its high price point, but I could not skip out on including this one from Hobie!

It is the cream of the crop with all of the bells and whistles an angler could want. Perfect for families or couples, this boat has dual helm control, allowing either rider to steer. It features utility trays, high back padded seats with inflatable lumbar support, sail mount, rudder control, cargo area with bungee tie-downs, twist and stow rudder, 2-piece paddles with on hull storage, cup holders, rod holders, mesh covered storage pockets. Again with two large men, keep your eye on the weight.
Tandem Lifetime Sport Fisher Kayak 10 Foot Sit on Top Kayak
The Lifetime Sport Fisher Tandem is designed to seat up to 3 people and hold 500 lbs. It includes two paddles, 2 backrests, three fishing pole holders and weighs 65 lbs. Because it is only 10 feet, do not expect lots of space or storage, but the twin hull means it will track well. This boat also works well for solo paddling. Although it is only 10 feet it does manage to fit a lot of a features into a small boat. The compact design means it should be lightweight, but it is still 65 lbs. (This was a plus for me, if you have not seen many photos, I have a golden retriever). The cockpit measures 23″ x 93″. It has 6 rod mount receivers and two rod holders. Its maximum load is 450-500 lbs and weights 62 lbs. Keep the weight limit in mind if you have two adults and a bunch of gear! You can also paddle this yak solo as the hull is designed not to pop up when the bulk of the weight is at the back.
The Vibe Skipjack 120T sit on top tandem kayak has three seat positions and can be paddled solo or hold two adults and a child. The BIC Trinidad Tandem Fishing Kayakis a 12 foot super compact two-seater kayak capable of taking two adults and one child on board. Compact but wide, the Trinidad is an excellent kayak for double paddling. It’s a highly stable boat, designed for solo or two-person fishing trips. While it makes claims to hold two adults and a child, the 440 lbs weight capacity means that it will not work well for two adult males. As I mentioned in the opening, evaluating your needs is the first step to deciding which yak is for you. Once you have a list of needs (and wants), budget will be your second consideration.
How much money do you have to spend as the price of kayaks varies greatly!
Thirdly, consider transportation. I have provided a big list of the top fishing kayaks, but you should not choose one that is going to be stuck in your garage! Do you plan on throwing it in the back of a toy hauler? The back of your pickup? Or how about on a kayak trailer? How you are going to get your new toy to the water is an important consideration!
